Rafael Gómez-Bombarelli, PhD, is a Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Physical Sciences at Lila Sciences, where he leads the strategy and execution of AI approaches to advance scientific superintelligence in chemistry and materials, across experimental data and physics-based simulations.  

As a pioneer in machine learning for chemistry and materials, his work has focused on fusing deep learning with physics-based simulations to accelerate the discovery of new materials for energy, catalysis, sustainability, and healthcare applications, resulting in over 150 scientific publications.  

Rafael joined the faculty of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2018 and has received faculty awards from the Sloan Foundation, the Dreyfus Foundation, and Google. Prior to his faculty appointment, he conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University on high-throughput simulations for OLED design and at Heriot-Watt University on quantum biology. He was also a founder of Calculario and served as Chief Learning Officer of ZebiAI, which was acquired by Relay Therapeutics. He currently sits on the scientific advisory boards of multiple biotechnology companies.  

Rafael holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry, an MS and BS in Chemistry, all from the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain.
