Andrew Beam is Chief Technology Officer at Lila Sciences, where he leads development of AI for scientific discovery. His research spans machine learning, biomedicine, and causal inference, with a focus on building AI that reasons about complex biological systems.
Prior to LILA, Andrew co-founded Generate:Biomedicines, helping build one of the first generative AI platforms for protein and therapeutic design. He served as a Senior Fellow at Flagship Pioneering, leading machine learning across the portfolio. He is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a secondary appointment at Harvard Medical School.
Andrew co-founded NEJM AI to help define how AI is evaluated and adopted in clinical practice. He received the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Pioneer Award and was named to Modern Healthcare's 40 Under 40.
He earned his PhD and MS from North Carolina State University, along with BS degrees in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering. In 2025, he was inducted into the NC State Computer Science Alumni Hall of Fame.
